Information

Sovremiennyj (also known as Project 956) is the name of a class of Soviet, and later Russian, missile destroyers that entered service from 1980. In total, 19 units of this type were created. The total length of this type of ship is 156 meters, the overall width is 17.3 meters, and the full displacement is about 7,900 tons. The maximum speed is 32 knots. The on-board armament of the earliest ships of this class included, among others: 2 quadruple SS-N-22 rocket launchers, two SA-N-7 rocket launchers, two twin 130 mm cannons and 4 sets of 30 mm AK-630. Units of this type can be based on one on-board helicopter, eg Ka-27 Helix.

Sovremienna-class destroyers were built in parallel with Udaloj-class units. They received primarily weapons and electronic equipment dedicated to destroying surface and air targets, at the expense of anti-submarine warfare (ZOP). Unlike several previous classes of Soviet ships, they were powered by a conventional steam-turbine power plant, not just gas turbines. Units of this type are characterized by the ability to operate in the ocean and quite a good ability to combat surface targets. There were two major upgrades to the basic project 956. The first one is called Project 956A, which is equipped with upgraded water-to-water missiles. The second variant is Project 956EM, which was developed for the needs of the Chinese Navy.
