The American A-20 Havoc light bombers and ground-attack aircraft, and their Commonwealth-designed Boston variant, were among the most important types of this category during World War II. They were used in almost all theaters of operation. To fulfill the low-altitude ground-attack role, they were often converted to carry machine guns in the forward fuselage, becoming known as gunships.
